Historical Commission unanimously elects Hoadley as acting chair
Historical Commission · Meeting of April 22, 2026
COHASSET — Historical Commission appoints Hoadley as acting chair; backs first U.S. Famine memorial. Chair Martin St.
John, relocating from the area, was unanimously replaced by member Susan Hoadley for the remainder of 2026. The commission also endorsed a monument honoring the 1849 wreck of the Brig St. John, which killed approximately 100 people including 25 children.
The South Shore Irish Heritage Trail, working with the Global Irish Famine Way initiative, identified Cohasset for the memorial. The commission proposed two sites: the north side of Cohasset Common and near the Central Cemetery gate, pending approval from several town committees and the Select Board. The monument would be the first of its kind in the United States; Cohasset will be honored as an international site by the Irish government in May at First Parish Church.
