Planning Board delays Cushing Highway hearing to Sept. 2
Planning Board · Meeting of August 5, 2026
Cohasset Planning Board continues a 36,781-square-foot Cushing Highway project review to Sept. 2 and opens a town-wide private-ways debate. Town Planner Cassandra Thayer told the board the applicant, Jonathan M. Silverstein, needed more time to prepare stormwater and drainage materials and plans a separate Zoning Board of Appeals filing for Sept. 14; the board voted 5-0 to continue.
Members then spent over an hour on private-way policy, prompted by member Amy Glasmeier, with roughly 14 of Cohasset's 52 miles of roads privately owned. Vice Chair Kevin Heine warned a poorly designed fix "could get worse for the town in a hurry" and cause "balkanization" of neighborhoods. Resident Dan Tarpey of 12 Bates Lane said a 2017 town meeting warrant shifted maintenance costs onto private-way owners without their knowledge.
The board approved July 7 minutes 5-0 and will revisit the policy question, possibly with a hired consultant, at a future meeting.
